Beginning Beekeeper 101 Courses

Defiance County Extension Office

This class will be an overview of what to expect during your first year of beekeeping, including:

  • Costs (bee equipment, bees, support gear)
  • Building (hive bodies & frames)
  • Basic Colony Breakdown (types & breeds of bees)
  • Colony Requirements (forage, water, laws, etc.)
  • Hives (all parts & explanation)
  • Pests & Disease (overview only)
  • Summer Buildup (additional items & costs)
  • Extracting Honey (equipment & gear)
  • Fall & Winter Preparedness (stores, stressors, readiness)
  • Emergency Feeding (different methods)
  • Question & Answers from Mentoring Panel (mentors, experienced beekeepers, and newbees to answer all of your questions)

 

Cost:  $45.00, which includes:

Internship classes are offered outside of BSBA


Beginner Internship Class (March – November)

Defiance County Extension Office

Schedule: classes are held on the 2nd Saturday of each month (March – November)

COST: $ individual / $ couple, which includes:

  • PowerPoint Presentations & binder
  • Honeybee Health Coalition book
  • “Bee-Sentials: A Field Guide,” by Lawrence John Connor
  • 1-year OSBA Membership ($24.00 value) to OSBA

  • June – Field Day at the Pollinator Sanctuary & Training Facility of Defiance County
  • July – Honey processing, hive products & pests
  • August – Fall preparation, dearth & feeding
  • September – Winter preparation, feeding & stores
  • October – Making it through Winter & 2nd Year Beekeeping
  • November – Potluck Dinner (5:30 pm – 8:00 pm)

  • March – Spring build-up (1:1 sugar/water, pollen patty)
  • April – Swarm prevention, artificial swarms, nucs & increases
  • May – Drawing comb & wax, rotating & checkerboarding frames, cut comb
  • June – Raising Queens (OTS, Miller, Dolittle, dirty or walk away splits)
  • July – Setting up a honey house & hive products
  • August – Honey judging & entries for county fairs & conferences
  • September – Fall preparation (dearth & mass feeding)
  • October – Winter preparation (combining, double screen boards)
  • November – Potluck Dinner (5:30 pm – 8:00 pm)
